VI. Hoes Down Harvest Festival
The Hoes Down Harvest Festival is (http://www.hoesdown.org) coming up on October 4th this year. Would you like to be a big part of it by volunteering to help?
Every year, the Hoes Down raises critical funds for schools, scholarships, youth programs, agricultural land trusts and community development activities that promote sustainable agriculture and the development of future farmers. Last year we raised almost $50,000 that went to Statewide, Yolo County, and Capay Valley organizations. We hope to top that this year!
The Hoes Down takes place at Full Belly Farm and is organized almost entirely by volunteers. It is a showcase of the best in sustainable agriculture, demonstrating through tangible experiences, to thousands of families, why the local family farm matters and how a sense of community grows around the many facets of food and fiber production.
We invite you to help us make this 21st annual Hoes Down one of the best ever. We are doing as much as possible this year to reduce our carbon footprint. We hope to organize several buses to the Hoes Down from the Bay Area and to encourage ride shares as much as possible.
Volunteer shifts are four hours (occasionally three) and in return you receive complementary entrance and camping ($40 value.) Shifts start at 7am and go until the late evening. Please get in touch with us as soon as possible, so that we can schedule your shift. We look forward to hearing from you.
There are openings in food service, children's area, parking, wreath room, ice cream, set up and all of the other activities that many of you have become expert at over the years. If you want information about being a Hoes Down volunteer, please contact us soon!
* E-mail us at: volunteers@hoesdown.org, Or call: 530-796-2214.
* If contacting before August 9th, e-mail danielle.louhrine.lee@gmail.com or call 559-351-4354 for volunteering in the Children's Area; after August 9th, please email: volunteers@hoesdown.org
VII. Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA)
Waste Wise Station Monitor
Ferry Building, San Francisco
Every Tuesday from 9:30-2 and every Saturday from 7:30-2
This past Earth Day, CUESA successfully launched it's new Waste Wise Farmers Market. To make our operation more earth-friendly, we introduced several custom-made Waste Wise stations around the market. Each station has a bin for recycling, compost and trash. This new system will turn over 78 tons of waste into valuable compost this year! To ensure every can, plate, fork and crumb makes it to the right place, we'll need a team of volunteer monitors each week. The program runs every Tuesday and Saturday, and is perfect for those interested in education and outreach. Help educate thousands of people about being waste wise! This opportunity is perfect for both individuals and groups. Each morning will begin with a half hour training, and all materials will be provided. We'll provide refreshments from the market throughout the day.

VIII. reCreate—A New Non-Profit!
reCreate works with local businesses to collect their unwanted but clean waste/manufactured by-products and use them for environmental learning and creative expression. Reuse is an incredibly important part of the equation, and yet most people don’t know the difference between reuse and recycle. Further, as you might be aware, kids are getting very little in the way of environmental learning at school, and even less art these days. reCREATE is working to change that.
They are reaching out to the community to find volunteers to help with material pickups, website development, and assistance in development of our curriculum for the fall. (K through 8)
Here is the link to reCreate for more info: www.recreate.org
In the Art, Reuse and Other Cool Green Links section, there are four other programs that have been around for many years. They are modeling the program off of the proven models, with hopes of creating a standardized version that can be easily replicated in other cities. They are planning to have a vehicle go out to schools and events as well as a storefront with a gallery, classroom, and warehouse. There’s a great video at http://www.trashforteaching.com/index.html that does a great job of explaining the concept.
If you are interested in volunteering for this great new program, contact Donna Sangwin at 916.770.9880 or donna@recreate.org
